Top 10 Pinterest Recipes I’ve Made

I have taken to cooking in the past year or so more than ever due to Pinterest.  Wait. Before you go and think, “Here we go… what a typical girl,” I honestly hated Pinterest with a flaming passion for a good 2 years. I thought it was half a knockoff of Tumblr which I was forever faithful to (and still am, to some degree) and half a Google Images search for things tagged as “damask print.”

It didn’t help that all the people I thought were kind of  ::ahem::  lame kept posting photos the terribly pathetic crafts they had made and pictures of things they would, “Omg Srsly Abs ❤ to Make, Like Srsly!” for their, I don’t know… keg party, all thanks to this social website. Needless to say, I had/have some type of weird relationship with Pinterest and it took me a while to get over my innate hatred for the thing.

Now let me explain how this hate turned to – almost, kind of, pretty darn near – love. I decided one day that I wanted to start to cook a bit more since it’s exponentially better for you and I’m kind of a health/organic/natural nut. Not the “Tree-hugs and Patchouli!” kind, just the “No Chemicals!” kind. And to tell you the truth, I’m not entirely strict about all that, either. I guess I’m good at being an organic natural freak when I feel like it cause lezzzzbehonest, I still eat Kraft Sharp Cheddar Macaroni and Cheese.

Anyway… I thought about getting recipes online and how truly time consuming it would be. I then realized people Pin things on Pinterest because they’ve made them or they look enticing enough to digitally save. I thought it’d be a great way to make dishes that real people actually like cause Rachel Ray may look like she’s making something delightful but how many people would make it themselves at home? Cookbooks are for fangirls. Pinterest recipes is like surveying the huge vast Pinterest audience for the best of the best. Warning: any & all of my logic may be flawed.

Here are 10 of my most favorited recipes from the past year or so, most of which I’ve made over and over again. Voters include: Myself, My boyfriend Jayme, My Chihuahua Stu, and Fini the Beef-Jerky-eating cat.

Avocado Corn Salsa (My first Pinterest recipe ever!) This dip is to die for and super healthy and simple. I also top salads and tacos off with this stuff if any is left over!

Arugula Zucchini Pesto Pasta Holy moses, is this good. I rarely have pine nuts on hand so I often omit those. It’s still incredible.

Cheeseburger Cassarole  This stuff is life-changing. I mean it. I use vegan beef crumbles and it honestly does taste like a McDonald’s hamburger which is amazing to me since I haven’t had one in like, 20 years. I think we’ve made this probably 7 times since we discovered it cause it’s so. damn. good.

BBQ Chicken Chopped Salad  Another winner we make over and over again. It’s simple and I use fake chicken and a lot more corn! Oh, and I love this blog since I find lots of recipes I love here (iowagirleats, link below).

Smothered Sweet Pork Burritos  I made these for my meat-eating boyfriend and he just about died at the table. Do yourself a favor and make these!!

2 Ingredient Cookies I doubled this batch and they were gone in 1 day. Sad and true. However, they’re only about 33 calories each plus any mixins so really… it’s practically free calories. Kind of. Not really. I baked mine for 20 minutes and they were perfect!

Cinnamon Chocolate Chip Protein Bars   I honestly don’t really eat a lot of protein bars but my bf does so I found this recipe and he pleaded we try it immediately. We finished the first batch and wasted no time making a second. Tip: If you want chewier bars, use half the protein or use the same protein but add applesauce.

Pumpkin Apple Banana Bread  This is an incredible and easy bread to make. I love chunks of apples in just about anything so this was right up my alley. We made 2 batches of this so far and doubled it every time.

Brown Butter Sweet Potato Alfredo Doesn’t it just sound incredible? It’s easy too. I used skim milk and smart balance and it turned out fantastic just the same. We had it as a main dish and then as a side the next night. Perfect for both.

Skinny Funfetti Dip  I think this is the most famous Pinterest recipe out there and rightfully so. I miss Dunkaroos and this is the healthy version, if there ever could be one. I don’t make this very often or I’d easily be a diabetic by now. I serve it with animal crackers cause I’m truly an overgrown child and I don’t care! 🙂

Thanks to all those wonderful people out there who take the time to blog their amazing kitchen concoctions so I don’t go hungry! hehe

If anyone happens to read this and know of recipes I would love, please leave it in the comments; I don’t know what to make for dinner tonight 😛

I’m hesitant to say it but… my skin looks awesome!!!

I’m getting really great results from the skin care items I’ve been using for the past few months. I posted about the products I was trying a few weeks back and wanted to give a happy update. My skin is greatly improving every day and I can honestly say I think it’s due to these items. Together or separate, I’m not sure what the biggest helpful addition is/was, but I’m super excited about it. You can read the post where I detail the products I’m using here.

Oh and here’s me today without any makeup and only my Shiseido moisturizer… o_O

IMG_2310_22 copy

Sure, I took that picture with my iPhone so it’s not the greatest of qualities but I just want to point out how much smoother and clearer my skin recently has become. Which I never thought I’d get to say until I was like, 70.

I’ve been battling these bumps on my face for about 2 years now along with the occasional regular breakout. I have had a remarkably lesser amount of that in the past 2 months. One or two very minor blemishes pop up but they quickly go away.

[For sanity’s sake, I’ve just linked all these products for those reading at the bottom of the post.]

Here’s some newer products I’ve added into the overall routine (and also pictured is an oldie but goodie as in HG status):

1. Dickinson’s Original Witch Hazel Toner: I use this after I get out of the shower/after washing my face completely with my Clarisonic and MB Glycolic cleanser, before I put on moisturizer. I feel that this toner balances my skin and gets rid of any surviving makeup (which is quite the feat there, Mr. Makeup). I also found out this comes in *huge* pre-moistened towelettes which is super convenient for those who travel a lot.

2. L’Oreal Skin Perfecting Micellar 3-in-1 Cleansing Water Solution:  Ok. This stuff isn’t available in the US, so let me just say that straight away. I heard great things about Bioderma and that this L’Oreal one was a dupe so I bought it online on eBay. And wow… it’s quite amazing. It’s like a makeup remover and toner mixed into one. It feels like water, has no scent, and it is hypoallergenic, also a great plus for my breakout-prone skin. I tried it and immediately fell in love. It leaves no oily residue and removes everything with a cotton pad. I recently tweeted L’Oreal to bring this to the US since it’s so much cheaper ($6-8, US converted price for 200ml) than the Bioderma ($30ish for 250ml). Hopefully they hear my sobs all the way from my makeup chair.

3. Palmers Coco Butter Swivel Stick: I’ve used this stuff since middle school. People used to ask me if I was putting a glue stick on my lips. Boys thought I was weird. I just knew I had the softest lips in town. I think it’s needless to say I still use this every day and have multiples laying around the house. It’s soft, buttery, smells incredible, and covers your lips in 1 swipe. It also stays on your lips for a long period of of time and actually sinks into your lips, unlike an EOS ball lip balm. I’ll use this forever, I’m sure. Did I mention it’s under $3?

Oh, and did you notice the bottom of the one pictured, where my dog Stu decided to try it out as a bone? I never knew he was into soft lips.

4. Shiseido Ibuki Refining Moisturizer Enriched: Yes I’ve posted about this stuff before but here I go again!

I’ve been using this goo for about 4 months now, ran out, and have even repurchased it. I use it alone as my nighttime moisturizer. It’s thick, absorbs quickly, doesn’t make me oilier (thank god), has a nice scent (if you’re sensitive you may think it’s overpowering but I love it), doesn’t have any sulfate ingredients, and it doesn’t clog my pores — hallelujah! I have nothing bad to say about it except that it’s $45 for 1.7 oz… however one lasted me for over 3 months with using it every single night without fail.

5. Boscia Enlivening Amino-AG Eye Treatment: I posted in my February Skincare Update about how I was using this new product here when I got this as a sample and gave it a try as I really love all other Boscia products I’ve bought — I try to go for more natural products, both in what I eat and what I put on my body, as much as possible (provided the body/makeup product works, haha).

I use this eye cream at night after I put on my face moisturizer. It has a slight silicony feel without being overly slippery (hate that). It sinks nicely into my eye area and seems to hydrate it well. I don’t have much dryness in my eye area though so I can’t comment on how well it would work for people with extremely dry skin. I think it seems to have lessened any fine lines a bit and I would definitely purchase it in the future. I have another eye cream to try out first but I – officially, certainly – like this one a lot. 🙂

I’ve put all these items in a collection on my Luvocracy site so that anyone can find/buy them straight away aka no googling: Current Skincare Products Luvocracy Collection

Stay tuned as I will be posting about a face ‘peel’ I just tried and am seemingly falling in love with. As in, take-the-peel-out-for-dinner-and-buy-it-pink-roses love. I won’t be buying it red roses quite yet; I don’t want to jump the gun, ya know?

Thanks for taking the time to read & to hang out with me.

Hukkster – Sales on Things You Actually Want

Happy Thursday!!! My favorite day of the week!

So, I recently discovered this little gem of a website or ‘app,’ if you will. It’s called Hukkster and it alerts you when items you want go on sale, immediately.

First, you sign up (it’s free and no invitation is required). Then you “Hukk” things on sites as you browse (read: shop) along normally. Hukk things by either bookmarking the Hukkster site to add things to your collection or install the Chrome extension button, which is my favorite option (they also have a cute little video showing you how to do this).

Screen Shot 2014-03-06 at 1.54.05 PM

Once a Hukked/saved item goes on sale, Hukkster alerts you via email and/or text. If it’s a coupon code-type sale, it tells you what exact coupon to use to get the item at $XX sale price! If you need inspiration or things to watch (not that I expect anyone does), there are tastemakers to follow who suggest things to Hukk which is cool, too. I always like seeing what other people are “watching.”

Screen Shot 2014-03-06 at 1.51.57 PM

I’m happy they didn’t turn it into another social media site where you “follow” people’s saved items and such. I am starting to feel like we have too many social media sites to follow all our friends on that it’s getting very redundant and too time consuming. The option to Share items is enough social interaction as far as I’m concerned. If I really want everyone to see it, I’ll just Pin It to a Pinterest board. In other words… Bravo, Hukkster!

I recently changed jobs so while I’m working on getting my freelance design business running, I’m trying to save as much money as possible and this is perfect since I still obviously need to buy spring stuff. Thankfully it’s still cold as all hell where I live (I’m sure that’s the first and last time I’ll ever say that) so I have a bit of time yet!

So yeah. It’s really quite awesome so far, I couldn’t wait to share it. I have a link here to check it out for yourself (No, I don’t get anything if you click it. Actually, what they do is donate a warm coat to a child in need for every 10 friends you refer which is super awesomer than getting compensated!): Hukkster

Back to shopping, I go.

Bad Beauty Habits!

We all have them. Sometimes I don’t admit them to myself either. So let’s get real for a hot minute.

There are a bunch of beauty ‘habits’ we shouldn’t nevar evar do; here are my top 5.

1. Touching thy face.

This means putting your hand on your chin or cheek, picking and prodding at blemishes, etc. I am guilty, 100%. I can’t not touch my face. My hands gravitate there when I’m not even looking. Sometimes I think it’s a learned habit and sometimes I think it’s almost like a nervous tick. It’s so annoying to me too, since I know I shouldn’t do it since hands are the most bacteria-laden things on your entire body!! I have to remind myself daily (hourly?), NO TOUCHY. It’s like I’m scolding the child inside of me. It helps if my nails are painted since I don’t want to mess them up or if I had just put on hand lotion. Those are my little tricks that sometimes work. It’s the most hated thing about myself but hey, it’s a work in progress.

2. Flossing.

I hate to floss. It’s annoyingly tedious and I feel like it rarely does anything that I can “see.” That’s usually the problem with me; if I don’t visually see a difference, I don’t think it’s doing anything regardless of knowing better and years of dental hygiene being drilled into my skull. It’s one of those things I’m working on as well which is also going hand-in-hand with finishing my dental routine with mouthwash. This blog post is already sounding like I am a scuzzy scuzzball. I promise I’m super clean and healthy 😛

3. Peeling Off Nail Polish.

I paint my nails all the time and I love it. I have more nail polish than I can count and am always adding to the collection. My fallback is nervously or absent mindedly peeling off my nail polish. My policy is, once I start don’t stop until it’s all off (although this is not a good policy, haha). This is mostly due to my absolute hatred of massively chipped nails. I can stand a few chips as that’s normal wear, but having half your nail polish missing reminds me of those gross people who smell of old cigarette smoke and daddy issues. However, peeling the polish off really ruins the top layer of your nails and could possibly damage your nail bed! If you do this too, have you ever noticed how dry your nails sometimes look after you peeled off the color? I’m trying to not be as lazy and just grab my nail polish remover but everyone knows how much more fun it is and easier it is to peel it off, especially for glitter nail polish! I have yet to try those “Peel Off” base coats as I hear they don’t make your polish last as long but may give it a shot soon if I hear of a good brand to try.

4. Daily Hair Washing.

I have an oily scalp, oily face, oily everything. How could I possibly go a day without washing my hair? It’s long, fine, and oily. That’s a recipe for disaster.

Well… I recently did it. About 3 months ago, I started washing my hair every other day and I’m still alive and sane. I know, I know – I can barely believe it myself. I do color my hair and that does take some of the natural oils out and my hair tends to be less oily after I’ve just had it done, so I have that working in my favor. However, I began washing my hair twice in the shower and then conditioning (or deep conditioning). I rarely dry my hair or for more than 3 minutes if I absolutely have to. On second day hair, I use the HG-status Batiste dry shampoo which is my sole savior during those off days. I remember watching Casey Holmes’ video (video here) on how she ‘weaned’ her hair off everyday washing (she has similar skin to myself) and it’s working for her that she’s at the point of washing every 3 days or more, I believe, which is amazing as far as I’m concerned. I don’t know if I’ll ever get to that point, but she motivated me to try it and I think my hair is similarly adapting. It’s a rough process but so much better for your hair to wash as least as possible so it’s certainly my bad habit to try and break.

5. Body Moisturizing.

I used to be so good at this, I swear. For years. Now, all of a sudden I never fully moisturize my body after a shower anymore during the cold winter months. I simply can’t bare to be cold for a second longer than necessary and I put as much clothes on as possible as soon as possible, leaving no time to moisturize my skin. Do I even have to say that it’s the worst time to “forget” to moisturize? Winter dries out your skin worse than ever and I literally have the deserts of Nevada spread across my body. I have a space heater in my room now so it’s helping me stay warm enough to slap some body butter on, for now. Spring is not too far away so at least I have warmer weather to help me break this habit!

Seven Deadly Sins Tag

Thanks Obama! It’s Presidents Day!

I found the SEVEN DEADLY SINS tag on LauraBorealis’ blog and thought I’d do it too.

Greed: What’s your most expensive beauty item?
Clarisonic Mia 2! I love this thing and it literally lives up to the hype. It changed the texture of my skin and my boyfriend even uses it.

Wrath: What item do you have a strong love/hate relationship with?
Anything Rose scented. For example, the Korres Wild Rose + Vitamin C Sleeping Facial. It does wonders to my skin’s brightness but I have a hard time getting over the scent. I also want to like it because my middle name is Rose! Dumb, I know. To top it all off, I think it breaks me out a bit. After all that, I keep trying to use it because I love it so much. Boo hoo 😦

Gluttony: What brand takes up most of your collection?
MAC or L’oreal. I tend to die over all L’Oreal products and have tons of MAC shadows.

Sloth: What product do you ignore the most due to laziness?
Definitely lipstick. Day to day, re-applying lipstick is a lot more work so I tend to go for balms and lipgloss (like laauraborealis!) even though I often wish during the day I brought my lipstick! Hindsight is 20/20?

Pride: Which product gives you the most confidence?
Concealer. I tend to get breakouts and have dark spots that make me feel like a spotted leopard at times. I feel most confident with an even skin tone.

Lust: What item is at the top of your list?
Hourglass Immaculate Foundation but I’m so in love with my IT Cosmetics BB cream right now I’m trying to wait it out a bit!

Envy: Which makeup product/look looks great on others but not on you?
White liner on my waterline. I think it makes me look sick rather than awake. I try to use a nude shade instead but I’m still trying to work out whether it looks good or like I’m on my deathbed.

Enjoy your day off everyone! If you’re working, well that’s more money in the bank to spend on yourself, gurrrrrrrrl.

Everyday Makeup Drawer + OOTD

I have a drawer in my vanity that I keep makeup I use regularly and items I want to remember to use and/or try out.

Here’s an updated drawer list for ya and how I use each of these products for my simplistic everyday makeup.

1: Laura Mercier Loose Translucent Setting Powder – I use this to set my under eye concealer with a small Real Techniques setting brush.

2: Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzer in Light/Medium, Milk Chocolate – I think this one is pretty obvious but I also use it as a crease color for when I’m in a rush! I’m too pale to use many bronzers out there but this one works well and smells like chocolate, as I’m sure most of you know by now. I use this with a Real Techniques blush brush because the pointed but fluffiness allows me to precisely contour my cheeks and around my hairline.

3: Nars Blush in Amour – This is a gorgeous berry pink shade that is perfect for this time of year when you need a bit more color but not the pastels of spring or brights of summer. I use it with a Sigma Large Angled Contour F40.

4: Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso – I’m in love with this peach shimmery shade of blush and use it almost every day as it goes with everything.

5: Stila eyeshadow in Kitten – I use this to highlight my brow bone, cheekbones, and obviously for an eyeshadow and mostly in my inner tearduct area. It is super smooth and buttery. It’s so multipurpose!

6: Nyx “Set It Don’t Fret It” HD Mineral Powder – I love this for adding a little more coverage to my BB cream or foundation. It’s never cakey and keeps my oily skin smooth and matte. I use this with a Real Techniques Setting brush.

7: Nars Light Reflecting Pressed Setting Powder – I just got this so I’m trying it out for the very first time. So far, it minimizes the look of my pores around my nose and is super smooth as a setting powder with a big fluffy Sigma F30.

8. Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed in Opal – I love this buttery highlighter. I saw this in one of Melmph’s videos (a haul maybe) and loved the shade. I don’t have very many highlighters and this is different in anything I would normally pick since it’s rather gold/yellow toned but yet neutral too. I use this to highlight my brow bone, cheek bones, cupids bow, you name it. I use this with a Sigma F05 Small Contour brush.

9. Milani Brow Fix Brow Kit in Light – I use the lightest shade of powder to fill in any sparse areas after I’ve lined my brows with a pencil. It makes for a softer look which I like best. I use a flat edge synthetic liner brush from Crown Brushes (something like this).

10. MAC Studio Finish Concealer in NC20 – This yellow-based concealer is perfect for red spots and neutralizes the redness. It stays put all day too! Holy grail status here, people. I use a Sigma F70 concealer brush to apply it (or my finger).

11. MAC Pro Longwear Concealer in NC15 – I use this underneath my eyes for dark shadows in the lightest shade they make, which is totally sad. Oh well. I blend it out with a Sigma F60 Foundation brush and apply whatever is left on the brush to my eyelids to neutralize any redness.

12. Laura Mercier Smooth Finish Foundation Powder – I got this as a sample from Sephora and I love to use it to set blemishes with it using the sponge that it comes with. The color is a little too warm/dark for me so I plan on purchasing the 2 or 3 shade and giving a lighter shade a try since I love it so far.

13. Cover Girl Lash Perfection Mascara – I never saw this mascara before I heard someone talk about it on YouTube. I needed a new everyday mascara and this one is perfect. It lengthens without being too thick since my eyelashes are already rather long. It gives me length and moderate volume.

14. 100% Pure Fruit Pigment Mascara in Black Ink – I have yet to try this little baby as I just got in a Birchbox which I posted about here, if anyone is interested.

15. Anastasia Beverly Hills Clear Brow Gel – I got this as a 100 point perk from Sephora and I’m so happy I did. I love it doesn’t make your eyebrows hard and shiny!

16. Cynthia Rowley Liquid Eyeliner in Black Ink – I got this in my Birchbox and so far, love the pen since it’s just like my all-time favorite, the L’Oreal Super Slim liner. I’ve used it a bit and so far, wish it was a little more ‘liquidy’ but I may just need to store it tip-down.

17. Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in Ash Blonde – I use this to outline the bottom of my brow and define the tail. I especially love using the spoolie at the end to blend everything in and soften the look.

Bonus! A little (belated) Valentine’s Day outfit of the day!

VDay Manicure <3

Happy Valentine’s Day, ya corny smooshy kissy-faced jerks!

I hate kind of hate Valentine’s Day simply for the fact that it’s so much about spending money and getting flowers more than spending time with people you kind of, like.

I did my nails to celebrate a little, which is more than I normally do (I usually wear a pink or red shirt but that’s all, folks). It’s a wonderful excuse to wear pink though… which is my favorite. For this manicure, I used:

Essie Blanc L’Oreal Colour Riche Caught Red HandedChina Glaze Snow Globe CND Stickey BaseSeche Vite Topcoat

I also used a dotting tool (links to the set I have) in the smallest of dots and a nail art paint brush to draw the outline of the heart. It was super easy and the only trick is to wait for each coat to completely dry so you don’t smear one color into the other. This was the most difficult part for me, as usual. I hope you enjoy, ya little heartbreaker!

Please excuse the desk top. My family dog destroyed with her nails it a few year ago and am in the process of finding someone to restore it 🙂
